The three Kiwanis clubs of Algona worked with Exceptional Opportunities to start an Aktion (pronounced Action) Kiwanis Club. An Aktion Kiwanis Club is a Kiwanis club for citizens who have disabilities. The club objectives are to develop initiative and leadership, to serve the community, to prepare for and be useful citizens, to accept and promote the Kiwanis ideals, and encourage daily living of the Golden Rule. Meetings are held twice a month, on the first and third Tuesdays with the Aktion Club electing officers, conducting a business meeting, and then enjoying a program. The Aktion Club is assisted in arranging for a program or entertainment by the other Kiwanis clubs in Algona.
Holding its first meeting on April 2, 2002, the Aktion Club of Algona has the distinction of being the first Aktion Club to charter in Iowa / Nebraska district and the 81st Aktion Club in the world. The Aktion Kiwanis club has been an opportunity for the individuals served by Exceptional Opportunities who have often been on the receiving end of people’s kind acts and thoughtfulness, to reverse that role and give to back to the community and to others. Since 2002, the Aktion Club of Algona has contributed financially to the following community and world projects: Sponsored local Christmas families, Food Pantry, Elementary reading programs, wheelchair accessible dock at Smith Lake, State 5 Theatre, Relay for Life, accessible swing set in Burt City Park, Children’s Miracle Fund – Iowa City, Kossuth County DARE program, Iodine Deficiency Disorder program, Guidepost subscription to prisoners, ditch cleanup, Crop Walk, Kossuth County Nature Center, Great Minds Learning Center, Pediatric Trauma kits for Lu Verne and Burt ambulances, Community School’s Reading programs, Founder’s Day free movies, sleep kits for Sleeping Children Around the World, Miracle League Baseball League, Jerry Lewis telethon, Caddy Shack, and Back Packs for local CARE team to give to child, teens and women who are in need of help and going through difficult times in their lives. Since it’s inception in 2002, the Aktion Club of Algona has given away over $18,000.00 to worthy projects, both local and around the world. This indeed is a club serving the community!
